How To Prevent Yeast Infection

Prescription of antibiotics is sometimes the only option

You’re fairly certain you’ve got a yeast infection when you’ve got some itching “down below". Before you run to the drug store for some anti-fungal cream you should be sure that it's a vaginal infection - if you don’t, you could be doing yourself a lot more harm than good.

A bacterial infection in your vagina itches in much the same way. A bacterial infection discharge will be dark yellow, brown or green. A yeast infection discharge will be white and quite thick - a lot like cottage cheese. There will be a nasty smell in both cases, but it is a different smell depending on which problem you actually have.

With bacterial infections the smell tends to be “fishy”, whereas with this infection it may be a “yeasty” smell such as alcohol or bread. Both obviously need treatment.

Possible Causes

Very tight jeans and panties that aren’t made of cotton prevent the vagina from breathing properly because it’s too restricted. This is a perfect breeding ground for yeast to grow. Don’t wear underwear at night if at all possible, to give the vagina a chance to breathe. It’s better to wear a nightshirt rather than pajamas for this reason.

Taking prescribed antibiotics can also upset the natural balance of the vagina in a similar way to anti-fungal treatments.

Hormone imbalances can also cause these infections and they have a habit of appearing if you’re run down or stressed.

Too many sugary foods and drinks may cause repeated infections due to the increased blood sugar levels. The more sugar you take in, the more the yeast will feed off it. It’s the same with alcohol, fizzy drinks, sweets and the like.

If you have frequent infections (frequent meaning getting more than three or four per year) ask your doctor if you can have a diabetes test because frequent infections can be one of the symptoms of diabetes.

Leaving on your wet swim suit can cause this infection. Change into dry clothes as soon as you’re done.

Unprotected sex with your partner can pass the infection onto him too. The Pill and other oral contraceptives won’t protect you from this so you’ll need to use condoms if you suspect you have an infection and during treatment for one.

The same applies for bacterial infection or urinary tract infection. Make sure your partner is also treated so that you don’t keep passing the infections back and forth between one another.

If you think that you’ve got this infection you should always get medical advice from a health professional rather than make your own decision. They can tell you whether you definitely have this infection and prescribe an antibiotic pill to treat it.

Treatment can work in a few days or it can take up to a week depending on the type of treatment that you are prescribed.
