Four Productivity Tips for Work at Home Moms

Work at home moms - Get the family involved!

Dear Women Over 40,

Work at home moms face unique challenges. There is so much “homework” you must do before taking the plunge. These tips can increase productivity and help make life a little easier for moms who juggle kids while working from home.

1. Establish clear ground rules
Make sure your family understands your working rules. When you're in your office or workspace, make sure they understand not to disturb you. Let everyone know that when mom takes a business call, it's everyone's job to play "the quiet game", or however you choose to set the rules in your house. This means you should also follow your own rules. You set the tone for the rest of the house, so if you set a schedule, stick to it as best you can. Observe your own office rules, and your family will follow.

2. Get the family involved
One way to get the family to understand and respect your work rules is to get them involved in the process. If you have older kids, chances are you're able to work in relative peace during school hours. But what happens during the summer?

For many work at home moms, summer vacation means decreased productivity. But summer vacation can also be a good time to get kids involved in your business.

You might set up an allowance or reward system for when your kids help with tasks like filing, faxing, or organizing supplies. If your children are interested in computers, consider hiring them for the summer to work on your website or to help you set up a client database. Not only will this give you a chance to work with your kids, but it can teach them business skills and take some tasks off your shoulders.

3. Find the number of a good daytime babysitter
Many work at home moms still take their young children to day care in order to get work done. If this option doesn't appeal to you, consider enlisting the help of a good babysitter or nanny to help out in your home a couple of days a week.

Even just a few hours a week can increase your productivity, and it also gives your child a nice treat to have a new person to play with! If your babysitter or nanny watches your children in your home while you are there, make sure you're clear that you shouldn't be disturbed while you're working. And resist the temptation to check in on them every fifteen minutes.

4. Get a Bluetooth cell phone headset
Have you ever missed a call because you couldn't find your cordless handset? It happens. Cordless phones tend to go missing on the morning you expect a big call, and that missed call could mean the difference between keeping or losing a client. Consider using a business-designated cell phone as your primary business number.
