Soy Milk

Cow's milk has long been a dietary staple for humans. We drink it, bake with it, and eat foods such as cheese and butter that are made from it. And the dairy industry has advertised extensively in an effort to get us to consume even more milk.

Yet there has been a great deal of discussion lately about alternatives to milk. They are necessary for those who are allergic to milk, lactose intolerant or follow a strict vegan diet. But even people who do not fall into these categories have expressed an interest in non-dairy milk. Some believe that cow's milk is simply too hard on the human digestive system.

The most popular alternative to cow's milk is soy. Made from crushed soybeans, soy contains no lactose and is naturally low in fat. But cow's milk loyalists argue that it does not offer the nutritional benefits of "regular" milk. The debate has been long and arduous, and no clear winner has been defined. Following are some of the points made on both sides.

Cow's Milk Advantages

  • It is an excellent source of vitamin D and calcium. Those who avoid milk are often deficient in these nutrients.
  • Skim milk offers the same nutritional benefits as whole milk, but without the fat.
  • Cow's milk has a taste that many people enjoy.
  • Cow's Milk Disadvantages

  • Whole and 2% milk are far more popular than skim milk, and they add unnecessary fat to the diet.
  • Between allergies, sensitivities and lactose intolerance, there are a lot of people who are well advised not to drink cow's milk.
  • Cow's milk is not suitable for a vegan diet.
  • Cows are often given hormone supplements to increase milk production, and these hormones are passed into the milk.
  • Soy Milk Advantages

  • It contains very little fat and cholesterol. A diet low in fat and cholesterol is good for the heart.
  • It is a great source of protein, containing almost as much as cow's milk.
  • It is readily available. Almost every grocery store carries it.
  • It is easily digestible. It is suitable for anyone who is not allergic to soy.
  • Soy Milk Disadvantages

  • It is more expensive than cow's milk. Those on a tight budget might want to try soy milk but be unable to justify doing so.
  • It does not contain vitamin D or calcium. Many soy products, however, are fortified with these nutrients.
  • It has not gained the widespread acceptance that cow's milk enjoys. Many consumers are hesitant to try it just because it's different.
  • Currently, cow's milk remains much more popular than soy. But new people are discovering the benefits of soy milk every day. Those who are disillusioned with dairy milk have found it to be a wonderful alternative.
