Menopause Information - How To Cope With This Important Life Phase

Woman in her menopause thinking about her life

Menopause information is much sought-after online, but also in the "real world". On this site I will provide you with articles about almost every aspect of this important phase in a woman's life.

First, to kick off I would like to share a story.

It's about Angie (not her real name). At age 30, she decided to get her tubes tied. Angie had two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. She was happily married and looked forward to tossing out her birth control pills forever. She heard from other women that periods are lighter, and no worries of an unexpected pregnancy among other benefits.

A few years after the procedure, she began to notice strange feelings. It turned out to be PMS – premenstrual syndrome. Her periods became heavier and menstrual cramping was so unbearable she was confined to bed a couple of days per month.

If that was not bad enough, she had severe breast discomfort and bloating every month.

She had a full-time job which was somewhat stressful. Gradually she began to feel awful before, during and after her periods. She was oftentimes very crabby and hard to live with. She lost patience with the children and when she felt her worst, would send them to their grandparent’s home nearby.

The relationship with her husband became quite strained. He frequently lost his patience with her because he didn’t know how to help her. There was nothing he could say or do to please her. She was unable to tell him what was wrong because she actually didn’t know herself.

So, she went to her gynecologist for help, now at age 40. The diagnosis was multiple, small to medium sized fibroids (benign).

For the sake of herself and her family, she tried very hard to deal with her issues. She read books to find answers and shared her situation with close friends. They were very supportive and when she was at her worst, they were there for her.

She cried a great deal, feeling powerless. She prayed for help.

This pattern of existence went on for about another 10 years and now at age 50. The children were in college and doing well. Unfortunately, she and her husband drifted apart over the years. She was in such a low mental state that she just didn’t care any more. It’s called major depression.

Her gynecologist suggested a hysterectomy which was justified because the largest fibroid was the size of an orange and her periods were so heavy she was chronically anemic.

Whether natural or surgically induced, menopause can be devastating for some women over 40.

The most important factors to consider: osteoporosis, breast health, hormone changes, foods and supplements to support the change, midlife weight control, heart health and mental state.

Discuss them with your physician and educate yourself as well via books and/or the Internet. Get the right menopause information. You can power yourself through this difficult stage of life and know that you will survive.
